Today is author birthday of August Wilson, renowned playwright and 1999 winner of the National Humanities Medal. https://www.neh.gov/about/awards/national-humanities-medals/august-wilson . From humble beginnings in Pittsburgh, he captured the rich vernacular sounds of Black Americans and transformed our theatres with his plays.
Today is also National Tell a Story Day–and it is fitting to look to the legacy of August Wilson for stories to tell, and share, and to inspire. Tell a story.
“I once wrote a short story called ‘The Best Blues Singer in the World,’ and it went like this: ‘The streets that Balboa walked were his own private ocean, and Balboa was drowning.’ End of story. That says it all. Nothing else to say. I’ve been rewriting that same story over and over again. All my plays are rewriting that same story.” –August Wilson
