George Eliot. Born 11/22/1819. Died 12/22/1880. Her birth name was Mary Ann Evans, but she wrote and published under a male pseudonym for greater access and success in the book world. Her novels include MIDDLEMARCH and SILAS MARNER. She coined words that we still use today, including “floppy” and “lunchtime.”
