Born August 24, 1948: August McCall Smith is Scottish, born in Southern Rhodesia, now known as Zimbabwe. His service includes medical law and bio-ethics expertise. As a writer, however, he is well-known for his series THE #1 LADIES DETECTIVE AGENCY novels, set in Botswana. I love how his novels capture the landscape, the culture, the warmth and humor of life and include a sense of justice and righting of the world’s wrongs, big and small.
