Helpful Suggestions

at the start of your post

*Search google or other search engines before asking questions in the forums.

*Be descriptive in writing your topic name. Topics like “help me” or “Hello” or “Urgent question” are not good choices. You should avoid them and others like them. Good examples “how to open a coconut” or “helpful children’s book on death.”

in your post

*Try to use good grammar, spelling and punctuation. Practice your writing skills here! This will also help avoid misunderstanding. However, when someone does make a mistake, don’t comment to correct their grammar, spelling, punctuation unless they are posting in the Feedback Loop/Critique Circle.

*When you realize you have started a controversy with a poorly written post: generally, we recommend that you don’t delete. You could edit with your apology or better worded version and italicize the original post. Others have commented. If you delete, their comments will disappear also. Try to balance considerations and make your choice to edit or delete to best respect everyone.

problematic posting

*Double posting isn’t respectful or helpful. If you’ve posted in the wrong forum, and no one has responded, this is a time you could delete and repost in the correct or better choice forum.

*If you respond to a topic, try to be helpful by speaking from experience or education. Don’t make up answers unless the topic asks for imaginative or creative responses.

using the Feedback Loop/Critique Circle forum

*Be kind but honest in the Feedback Loop/Critique Circle forum.

*If you are an original poster in the Feedback Loop/Critique Circle forum and get negative feedback on your submitted writing, do not complain or argue with the critic. Do not explain your choices or position.

You have two choices with all feedback: take it or leave it. You can accept it and see if it gives you a way forward or inspires you to change something to improve it; or you can leave it in the dust because you don’t find it helpful. Either choice is fine and yours to make.

If you feel injured or misunderstood, these are feelings you will need to learn to manage as a writer. We are here to support you in managing all the difficulties of the writing process. Head over to the Writing Life forum.

most importantly

*Have fun!
